Abstract

With an increasing number of academically and culturally diverse student populations in educational institutions, Universal Design for Learning (UDL) has the potential to improve the quality of teaching and learning for all students. However, there is dearth of research on UDL teacher in-service training to determine whether language skills of learners improve after being taught by teachers, once they receive adequate training. The purpose of this quantitative study was to measure the extent of effectiveness of the training provided to teachers on UDL and see its effect on the academic performance of learners. Eleven teachers from 7 schools and 36 students taught by these teachers participated in the study. A sample of these 11 teachers was evaluated; using a valid UDL Classroom Observation Checklist, for their ability to incorporate UDL based practices in their instructions. Further, performance of learners was assessed using a valid achievement tests. Data were collected before the intervention and after the intervention.
