The goal of the ANCESTOR pilot program is to engage Aboriginal learners in computer science careers by having them develop their own games or animated stories, using proven educational software environments such as Carnegie-Mellon University's "Alice". To make the experience more relevant to Aboriginal learners, a library of cultural images is being developed and added to the software environment. Learners can use these cultural images to explore their own unique history within their community and natural environment through their games or stories while also learning important logical and computational skills. The first test of this program recently completed at the LÁU,WELNEW Tribal School located on Tsartli’p First Nation near Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. The program will be expanded across both urban and remote Aboriginal communities in the next two years of the program.
