Abstract

The implementation of the Microsoft Innovative Teachers Grant involves the development of a Community of Practice and Expertise (CPE) among the faculty of the College of Education and the elementary/middle school faculties surrounding Northwestern. The ultimate goal of the program is to create an atmosphere of sharing among educators that has the potential to improve teaching and learning within the elementary/middle school CPE and to provide face-to-face and online professional development that allows educators to create lessons that exhibit an innovative application of technology. Microsoft SharePoint facilitates team building and allows for communication among educators while allowing local control and focus of the CPE. The overall benefit of the initiative is that it allows teachers to collaborate and learn from each other in an environment that is designed to encourage a change from teacher-centered curricula to student outcomes that reflect real-world situations and learning.
