Abstract

The Virtual Network Toolkit (VNT) provides a feature-rich multi-layer simulated network environment that supports interactive exploration of networking protocols and paradigms, giving students a firmer grasp of course concepts.. Socket-based applications written to run with a TCP/IP protocol stack can be transparently moved to a VNT virtual network environment. The VNT environment serves as (i) an out-of-class self-study tool for students, allowing them to experiment with an operational model of concepts studied in lectures, thus re-enforcing their learning of protocol concepts, (ii) a base for experimental activities incorporated into term assignments, and (iii) a teaching device to illustrate abstract and operationally-detailed concepts in tutorials and lectures.
