Abstract

Secondary school students in Tanzania were involved in the development of a digital platform for HIV education and counseling. A major reason for the failure of most HIV and AIDS campaigns in Sub-Saharan Africa is the lack of understanding the social structures which support the actual cause of the problems. Having the target group as co-designers helped to generate a platform that takes the local context and culture into concern. We identified four barriers in the distribution of HIV and AIDS learning materials these barriers are cognitive barrier, cultural barrier, teaching barrier and technical barrier. An analysis of them showed that these barriers can be reduced by involving the enrichment factors of cultural relevance, ownership and a story based approach. The analysis also shows that the ICT-based interventions help the students to enrich their understanding of HIV and AIDS by sharing their own stories.
