Learning in 3D virtual worlds: experiences with design

This paper discusses the design of 3D worlds to support a third year degree paper. The virtual learning environments were designed, built using Adobe Atmosphere and refined over a period of six years. Students studying the paper were also involved in creating designs and building their own prototype worlds which were linked through teleports from the main world for the paper. The project followed a participatory design process and the principles of design based research. During the project records of usage and the results from survey instruments based on student perceptions of their learning environments were utilized to inform the ongoing design. The evolution of the main world is discussed, along with the integration of various collaboration tools and sources of learning material. The themes in the student worlds are identified and analyzed to provide insight into the medium as an education environment. The project has identified a number of issues related to the technology and has some interesting observations on the design of online 3D worlds for learning.
