Abstract
This paper describes the design, development, and evaluation of the user interface that was used for a series of online staff development learning modules for L2 instructors at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center. Proactive requirements, rapid prototyping, and a user-centered evaluation contributed to the development of an effective online learning module design that is easy to use, highly reliable across a broad range of platforms and is easily transported to remote network servers. As noted by Gardiner and Christie (1987), the user interface provides a type of "dialogue" with the learner and is one of the most critical elements of effective e-learning. The process employed rapid prototyping development and informal focus group evaluations in developing a consistent, effective, and reliable user interface.
